Small Paul

The co-founder of Pure Filth, Small Paul pretty much single-handedly dragged Pure Filth kicking and screaming out of the smoke filled room of big ideas and made it a reality. Now studying in Brighton he has been relegated to ‘guest’ status (and a typically demanding one at that - Ed).

Paul came from a guitar music based background but began mixing in May 1997 following an introduction to the free party techno scene in mid 1996, going to parties organised by former Nottingham sound system Samovar and the legendary Desert Storm. In October 1997 he joined Dagobah sound system in Nottingham and in addition to playing at squat and outdoor parties around England, he also played as a resident dj as part of Dagobah at their nights in Nottingham clubs, the Skyy Club (now the Blueprint) and The Lenton.

During 1998 he collaborated with the promoter of the monthly eclectic dance music event, ‘Rebirth’ at the Marcus Garvey centre, becoming the resident techno DJ during it’s year long run at the venue and gaining valuable experience of how to promote club nights.

Following a chance meeting at a party in 1998 he became friends with DJ Jan Liefhebber, head of Dutch labels Highland Beats and Body Art Forms and subsequently played at Jan’s annual label party at the Doornroosje club in Nijmegen, Holland. Having built strong links with H.B. and Equivalence sound system Paul returned to Holland several times to play at club Diogenes (also Nijmegen), again at Doornroosje and at various squat and outdoor parties throughout the Netherlands.

In June 2000 frustrated with a lack of techno in a once thriving Nottingham, Paul and fellow Dagobah member Russ started Pure Filth at ‘The Old Angel’ in the city centre. Paul was both resident DJ and promoter and used Pure filth not only to showcase the Dagobah DJs and local talent but also established DJs/artists such as Chris Liberator and D.A.V.E. the Drummer, and providing an outlet for techno in the city once more.

In February 2001 he flew to Washington USA to play two venues in Seattle, also playing at venues in Tacoma and Bellingham elsewhere in the state and has since returned to Seattle in July 2003, playing on Jerry Abstract’s show on the 8th on Groovetech, the internet dance music radio station.

As you know, Pure Filth still continues monthly with new additions to the Filth massive and despite Paul now being based in Brighton and he occasionally turns up in Nottingham to play and annoy people as much as he can. He is now studying English Literature at Sussex University and is now plying his trade as a DJ in Brighton when and wherever possible.
